Family hopes their 9-year-old cat will accept a rescue kitten, but he decides to raise him instead

Some cats tolerate the new kitten in the house, but this nine-year-old boy took one look at the tiny newcomer and decided he was a mom now.

When his family rescued a baby kitten, they had a feeling their resident cat would make a good companion for the little guy. They just weren't prepared for how seriously he would take the assignment. Instead of simply becoming buddies, the older feline stepped straight into "mommy cat" mode, showering his new baby with enough affection to make this one seriously sweet bonded pair.

Their relationship started off with a little uncertainty. The kitten was understandably intimidated by the much larger cat and would hiss at him while trying to figure out whether this giant new roommate was friend or foe. The nine-year-old wasn't letting a few tiny hisses discourage him, though. He stayed nearby and patiently worked on winning the baby over while the kitten adjusted to his new surroundings.

There were already promising signs from their very first introduction. The pair touched noses when the kitten was brought into the resident cat's day room, which sounds like a pretty solid start to a feline friendship. From there, the older boy kept close while his future baby slowly got comfortable.

Clearly, his persistence paid off.

Now the two are ridiculously affectionate, and the nine-year-old has fully embraced life as a devoted feline parent. This wasn't just the friendship his hoomans hoped might develop when they brought the kitten home. Their older cat saw a tiny baby in need of some comfort and decided that was his baby now.

The family rescued one kitten, but that little guy also ended up getting a bonus parent in the deal. Single motherhood looks pretty darn cute on this devoted cat dad.

  • He’s the cat that stepped up and took his new role very seriously. Nobody told him he needed to become this kitten’s second parent, but one look at the little guy and he was ready for the job. He stayed close while the kitten got comfortable, patiently earned his trust, and now the two are practically inseparable. This baby needed some extra love while settling into his new home, and his older feline buddy was more than happy to provide it.

  • Nothing cuter than these two watching baseball together. The kitten is already glued to his new buddy’s side, so naturally that includes hanging out for the game too. They’ve got their eyes locked on the screen like they have money riding on the score. Maybe they’re following the game, maybe they’re just waiting for someone to catch the ball so they can chase it. Either way, baseball afternoons are clearly a family activity in this house now.

  • The resident cat basically got his very own kitten, and he seems pretty pleased with the arrangement. His hoomans may have been the ones who brought the little guy home, but he wasted no time claiming the baby as his own. Now he has someone to cuddle, look after, and keep close while the kitten learns the ropes. Forget getting a new sibling. This nine-year-old got promoted straight to feline parent, complete with one tiny kitten to love and spoil.
